Question

Why did The General cancel my car insurance?

I bought a policy with The General, but just over a month later they cancelled my policy! They said something about 60 days, but I didn't understand. How can they cancel my policy when they took me on as a customer in the first place? I haven't even had a chance to make a claim or anything!

The General — like other insurers in Texas — is allowed to cancel a brand-new auto policy within the first 60 days for almost any reason. Think of it as a trial period where the company double-checks your information and risk profile. After those first 60 days are up, they can only cancel for specific reasons (like nonpayment, license suspension, or fraud).

Why would they cancel so soon? It usually happens if something pops up during underwriting, such as:

  • Missing or inaccurate details on the application (tickets, accidents, prior insurance history).
  • Issues that increase the risk more than expected.
  • In rare cases, suspected misrepresentation or fraud.

It can feel unfair — especially if you haven’t filed a claim — but insurers treat those first 60 days as their window to make sure everything matches up.

Texas note: Under Texas law, this 60-day cancellation rule is standard. After that period, your policy is more protected, and The General would need a specific reason to drop coverage.

If this happens to you, the next step is to shop for new coverage right away so you don’t have a lapse. Be upfront with your history when getting quotes — other insurers may ask if you’ve ever had a cancellation, and accuracy here helps prevent it from happening again. Our agents here at The Zebra can help you compare coverage and rates when you're ready.

The state of Florida requires that insurance companies refund at least 90% of the unearned premium paid by a customer if they receive a request to cancel. I swerved to miss a deer in the road, wrecked my car, and now my insurance company is saying that I'm considered at fault. Why is that?

Hitting an animal in the road falls under the category of a comprehensive insurance claim because animals do not follow road laws and can't be expected to avoid cars or roadways. It's the same general principle as hail damage. The incident changes to an at fault accident when you swerve to avoid th…

If I have an open claim on a totaled car, how do I handle the insurance?

There's a couple of things to think about. First, canceling the coverage on this vehicle will not cancel the claim. As long as the policy was active at the time of the accident (which it sounds like it was), you should be fine. Second, if your car is totaled, you can cancel your insurance if you a…
