Question
If I cancel a policy less than 24 hours after starting it, will I get a refund?
I started a policy yesterday but it did not include an SR22 and I need one to keep my license valid. My husband was shopping around and found a better rate with a different company that also offered an SR22. If I cancel the other policy and go with the new company, will I get my down payment back?
Answer
The state of Florida requires that insurance companies refund at least 90% of the unearned premium paid by a customer if they receive a request to cancel. There are instances where a company may include the policy's fees within the first month so your refund can vary depending on which company you're with. Your best bet would be to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to request a cancellation and they can tell you exactly the amount of refund you can expect to receive from your down payment.
