Question

Why does Safety only sell in a few states?

I noticed Safety Insurance only works in certain New England states. Does that mean their coverage is limited or that they’re not as reliable as the bigger companies? Will I be covered if I move somewhere else?

Safety Insurance mostly sells auto and home insurance in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire, which might sound limited, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Smaller regional companies like Safety often focus on one area so they can know local laws and weather risks better (things like hail, ice, or Massachusetts’ no-fault system).

Their smaller size doesn’t mean they’re less reliable, either. Safety is financially stable (rated “A” by AM Best) and known for working closely with local independent agents. The trade-off is that they don’t have a 24/7 national call center or fancy app like the big brands. Claims are handled regionally, and that’s actually a plus for people who like direct service and fewer handoffs.

If you plan to move out of New England soon, you might outgrow Safety since they can’t move policies across state lines. But if you’re staying put, there’s nothing wrong with choosing a smaller company that’s strong where you live.

If you’re still deciding, The Zebra can compare Safety’s rates and service against national companies in your ZIP code, so you can see if staying local really pays off.

Should I buy a car first, or the insurance first?

You can't exactly buy insurance before you’ve picked a car, because the insurer needs specific information about the vehicle. However, you can’t legally drive off the lot without insurance, either. It can be slightly stressful sitting at the dealership, trying to get your insurance in order. Planni…

Is it easier to use an agent to get Acuity or find insurance online?

Acuity does work through independent agents, but that doesn’t automatically mean more hassle. This comes up a lot from people who are used to self-managing everything online. Is Mile Auto legit?

Yep — Mile Auto is a real insurance company, just a newer one that focuses on pay-per-mile coverage. Instead of using a tracking device or GPS, they have you take a quick photo of your odometer each month to report mileage. That photo helps calculate your monthly bill, which includes a small base r…
