Question
Is the AARP connection valuable or just a gimmick?
I qualify for AARP now and was wondering if it's worth switching to The Hartford, which I guess is AARP (it's a little confusing with who the underwriter is). Maybe it's worth it, but I don't want to deal with switching if it's just a sales partnership and won't really do anything for me.
Answer
That’s a fair question, because the AARP branding can make it sound like you’re getting a completely different type of insurance product. In reality, AARP doesn’t sell insurance itself. Instead, it partners with insurers, and for home and auto coverage, the partner is The Hartford
So the policy you’re buying is essentially a Hartford homeowners insurance policy with AARP member perks attached. The core coverage—things like protection for your home structure, belongings, liability, and temporary living expenses—is very similar to what you’d see with many standard homeowners policies.
Where the AARP partnership can make a difference is in a few areas:
- Member discounts and credits
AARP members may receive pricing credits or savings on their policy. Some programs also offer additional discounts if you bundle home and auto with The Hartford. - Features geared toward older homeowners
Because AARP’s audience skews older, the program sometimes highlights benefits that appeal to that group. For example, some policies include options like expanded rebuilding limits or coverage that can help adapt a home after a major loss. - Customer service emphasis
The Hartford has been the official insurance provider for AARP members for decades, so the program is designed to feel more guided and service-focused rather than purely digital.
That said, the AARP label doesn’t automatically mean the policy is better than other companies. Pricing, coverage options, and claim experiences can still vary depending on your home, your location, and the specific policy details.
A good rule of thumb is to treat it like any other quote. Look at:
- Dwelling coverage limits
- Deductibles
- Optional endorsements
- Total premium
If the AARP-Hartford quote is competitive and the coverage fits your home, it can absolutely be a solid option. But it’s still worth comparing it with a couple of other insurers before deciding.
