Will homeowners insurance cover my riding lawn mower that caught on fire?

I was starting my riding lawn mower and the battery in the motor blew up and caught on fire. Could this be covered by my home insurance?

Yes, you can file a claim with your homeowners insurance but I would see if your lawnmower's warranty is still valid before you look into a claim. If you do decide to file a claim, it would be covered under personal property. Keep in mind that your deductible will apply, which means your insurer will only pay for the damages that exceed your deductible and only for the amount that is exceeded by the deductible. You should call your insurance company to find out what your deductible is in order to decide if you want to file a claim. See this guide on what homeowners insurance covers. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Will my renters insurance pay for me to stay in a hotel if my house is damaged?

Renters insurance is extremely valuable since it is often inexpensive and provides lots of coverage when things go wrong. Specifically in your situation, your renters policy should include a "loss of use" provision that would cover temporary living expenses if you weren't able to live in your home because of a covered loss.

In truth, no. Car insurance companies determine their rates based on their previous years' filings (loss to revenue ratio) in addition to other factors.
