Will my State Farm car insurance cover damage to a person's balcony?

I have State Farm car insurance and I purchased additional U-haul insurance that had liability coverage. I hit another person's balcony with the big size U-haul while moving. Will my State Farm insurance cover the damages to the third party's balcony?

This one’s a little tricky. In most cases, your State Farm auto policy won’t cover a rented moving truck, because personal car insurance typically excludes larger vehicles like U-Hauls. That means your liability coverage with State Farm probably wouldn’t apply to the balcony damage.

The good news is that you bought U-Haul’s liability coverage, and that’s designed to cover exactly this situation — damage to someone else’s property or injuries caused while driving the rental. You’ll want to file the claim through U-Haul’s insurance provider (you should've gotten paperwork or an email about this when you rented the truck).

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  • If you only rented a small pickup or cargo van from U-Haul, some personal policies may extend coverage — it depends on the vehicle’s weight class. Larger box trucks are almost always excluded.
  • Since this is considered an at-fault accident, a covered claim could affect your insurance rates, but in your case, it’s more likely the U-Haul policy will be the one responding.
  • Always save your paperwork when you buy rental coverage — it helps clear up confusion if there’s overlap.

So in short: State Farm probably won’t cover the balcony damage, but your U-Haul liability coverage should. If you’re unsure about your specific policy, it’s worth a quick call to your State Farm agent to double-check. Good luck and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
