Question

Will Travelers pay for OEM parts if my car needs repairs after an accident?

I got in an accident and need some major repairs, and I have Travelers insurance. My truck (2021 Toyota Tundra) has high-quality parts and customizations, and I don't want to have cheap parts put back on when it gets fixed. Will Travelers pay for original manufacturer parts for my truck or is this going to cost me extra?

Travelers offers an OEM parts coverage option for newer cars, which guarantees original manufacturer parts are used in repairs. Without it, aftermarket or recycled parts may be substituted. So, it comes down to your specific vehicle and auto policy.

  • OEM parts = made by your vehicle’s manufacturer (better fit, resale value, and often safer in crash performance).
  • Aftermarket parts = made by third-party companies (cheaper, more widely available, but sometimes less precise in fit and finish).

Other carriers handle this differently: Erie and American Family sell OEM endorsements, while high-end insurers like Chubb and AIG often include OEM parts as a standard benefit. Some states even require insurers to cover OEM parts on newer vehicles. If OEM parts are important to you, check whether your policy already includes them or if you need to purchase an endorsement.

I got in an accident the same day I reinstated my lapsed policy. Will it be covered?

It depends on how the policy was reinstated. If they reinstated with no lapse, then you are free to file a claim. If they reinstated with no lapse but had you sign what is called a No Loss letter — which dictates that no accidents had occurred before taking payment — then filing a claim would be co…
