Question

How does Allstate handle claims in high-risk areas?

I have Allstate and just moved to an area that gets a lot of tornadoes and storms. I've never lived in a high-risk area like this, and I'm a little worried about what will happen if/when I have a home or auto claim here. Do all insurance companies handle storms and risks the same way?

Allstate generally has a good reputation for customer service, but your experience during a claim can vary. Living in a high-risk area (like one prone to wildfires or hurricanes) doesn’t mean you can’t file a claim—but you might pay more for coverage.

If standard home insurance isn’t available in your area, Allstate may offer coverage through FAIR Plans, which are state-run programs for higher-risk homeowners. Just note: these plans often cost more and may not be as comprehensive.

How the claims process works: If your home is damaged in a storm or disaster, here’s what to expect:

  1. File a claim online, through the Allstate app, or by contacting your agent. The sooner, the better.
  2. An adjuster assesses the damage to figure out what’s covered and how much repairs will cost. In widespread disasters, Allstate’s catastrophe team helps speed things up.
  3. You get your settlement and start repairs. If needed, Allstate can connect you with trusted contractors and provide updates along the way.

Thinking about switching?

If you’re considering other options, it’s worth comparing home insurance companies—especially if you’ve recently moved or seen rates go up. Where you live affects your premiums, and in high-risk areas, you may have fewer choices than before. Your location is a big factor when it comes to premiums, so you could see a huge difference compared to where you lived before. It's also important to be aware of storm risks and take precautions to protect your home and family in a disaster.

J.D. Power’s 2024 study ranked Allstate just below average for home insurance satisfaction. That doesn’t mean they’re a bad choice—it just depends on your needs and what you value most. Still have questions? Feel free to ask!
