Question

Does Mercury homeowners insurance cover wildfire damage in California?

I live in California and wildfire risk just keeps getting worse. I’m looking at Mercury for homeowners insurance, but I want to make sure I understand what I’d actually be covered for.

If a wildfire damaged or destroyed my home, would Mercury cover rebuilding and everything inside? I’ve heard stories about policies getting canceled or not covering enough, so I just want to be sure before I commit.

Mercury homeowners insurance, like most standard policies in California, does cover wildfire damage. So if your home is damaged or destroyed in a fire, your policy would likely help pay to repair or rebuild the home, replace your belongings, and cover temporary living expenses if you need to stay somewhere else during repairs.

The bigger question is usually not whether wildfire is covered, but whether you have enough coverage. Every policy has a dwelling limit, which is the maximum amount your insurer will pay to rebuild your home. In California, where rebuilding costs can climb quickly, it is worth checking that your limit still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild today, not what it might have cost a few years ago.

It is also a good idea to look at whether your policy includes extra protection above that limit, what your deductible would be if you filed a fire claim, and whether your insurer has any property requirements related to wildfire risk, like maintaining defensible space.

The challenge in California right now is often less about wildfire being excluded and more about availability and pricing. Insurers have become more selective in areas they see as higher risk, which can affect whether they offer coverage, renew a policy, or charge more for it.

So while Mercury generally does cover wildfire damage, it is still smart for homeowners in places like Fresno to review both their coverage limits and the policy details to make sure they are fully protected.
