Question
Will State Farm drop me because of small claims?
I’ve been with State Farm for 5 years and have filed 2 small homeowners' claims for hail damage. I reached out recently to ask about another minor incident where a delivery truck backed into my garage door (but it wasn't bad). The person I talked to said she wouldn't advise making a claim if we can get the delivery guy to pay for it, because they're getting picky about people with too many claims. Now I’m worried they might not renew my policy. Do companies really drop people after minor claims, or stuff like hail that wasn't even my fault? Isn't this the whole point of insurance?
Answer
Most insurers, including State Farm, look at claim frequency as well as claim size. From their perspective, several claims within a few years can signal a higher likelihood of future losses. Because of that, companies sometimes choose not to renew policies after a certain number of claims, particularly if they’re related to the same type of damage, like hail.
Two small claims over five years doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be dropped. However, it’s common for agents to caution customers about filing additional claims if the damage is minor or if another party might be responsible. In your example, if the delivery driver caused the damage, pursuing reimbursement from them (or their insurance) is usually the better route.
This doesn’t mean homeowners insurance isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. In practice, policies are designed to protect you from larger, unexpected financial losses, like major storm damage, fires, or significant structural problems. Smaller incidents sometimes make more sense to handle out of pocket if possible, especially when there’s another party who may be liable.
The good news is that nonrenewals usually don’t happen without warning. If a company is concerned about claim activity, you may receive a notice or discussion with your agent before the next renewal period.
For now, the best step is to talk openly with your State Farm agent and ask:
- How many claims typically trigger underwriting review?
- Whether hail claims are treated differently in your region
- If your current claim history raises any concerns
That conversation can give you a clearer picture of where you stand. And if you ever do receive a nonrenewal notice, you still have time to shop around for another homeowners policy before your coverage ends.
