Question

Will Alfa pay for my sewer disaster?

After some heavy rain last month our downstairs bathroom flooded because the sewer line backed up. It was a mess.

We have homeowners insurance with Alfa, but when I started reading the policy I wasn’t sure if sewer backups are actually covered or if that’s considered a separate type of coverage. I had to pay an emergency plumber and cleanup crew anyway but maybe I can get it reimbursed?

If you have a homeowners policy with Alfa, like most insurers, it’s important to know that standard policies typically don’t include sewer backup coverage by default. If you’ve added water backup coverage, you may be able to get some reimbursement, depending on what caused the damage and how the adjuster evaluates the claim.

Sewer backups happen when water or waste flows back into the home through drains, toilets, or sump pumps. Because this type of damage can be expensive and unpredictable, insurers, including Alfa, often treat it as a separate coverage option rather than part of the base policy.

That means if your bathroom or basement floods due to a sewer backup after heavy rain in Hattiesburg, your Alfa homeowners policy may only cover the damage if you’ve added water backup coverage to your policy.

This optional coverage is designed to help pay for things like:

  • Cleaning and sanitizing the affected area
  • Repairing damaged floors, drywall, or cabinets
  • Replacing damaged belongings

Without that endorsement, sewer backup claims are often excluded from standard homeowners policies.

The reason insurers separate this coverage is that sewer and drainage systems can be affected by many factors outside the home, including heavy rainfall, municipal sewer issues, or aging infrastructure.

The good news is that sewer backup protection is usually relatively inexpensive to add, especially compared with the potential cost of cleanup. I have this endorsement on my own home policy, and generally recommend it.

If you’re unsure whether your policy includes it, it’s worth checking your declarations page or asking your agent:

  • Whether water backup coverage is included
  • What the coverage limits are
  • Whether it applies to sump pump failures as well

Taking a few minutes to confirm your coverage can help prevent a very unpleasant surprise if a backup ever happens!
