Question

How's the claims handling at American National?

My neighbor had a hailstorm claim with American National and says they paid only half of the repair quote and the adjuster vanished. Is that a one-off, or is this a pattern with them?

Unfortunately, that kind of feedback shows up more than once with American National reviews—but it's not a cut-and-dry situation. In most cases, complaints come from hail or property claims, where the company uses independent adjusters instead of in-house staff. That’s pretty common with mid-sized insurers, but it can lead to uneven experiences depending on the adjuster’s workload or contractor estimates.

On the plus side, American National tends to settle fairly once disputes are documented, but policyholders say you need to be proactive. Keeping everything in writing (repair quotes, photos, and inspection notes) usually helps get things re-evaluated faster.

A few practical steps:

  • Follow up in writing if your adjuster goes quiet after a week.
  • CC your agent on every claim email—they can escalate through regional offices.
  • If you disagree with the payout, you can request a “reinspection”— American National generally honors that process.
  • Always review your deductible and coverage limits—some hail claims are limited by roof age or material type, which can surprise homeowners.

So yes, your neighbor’s frustration is real, but not every claim ends that way. The key with American National is staying on top of communication. If claim speed and responsiveness matter most to you, The Zebra's agents can help you shop around for great companies in Oklahoma that meet your needs.
