Question

Will GEICO increase my rates if I file a windshield claim?

I was driving on the highway when a gravel truck got in front of me. Even though I wasn’t too close, a rock flew back and cracked my windshield. Now there’s this long crack right across my view, and I’m not sure if I should file a claim with GEICO to get it fixed. Will that make my rates go up?

Filing a windshield claim with GEICO usually won’t cause your car insurance rates to go up. These repairs fall under comprehensive coverage and are often treated as “no-fault,” meaning they don’t count against you like an at-fault accident might. Small chip repairs are sometimes even free with no deductible, while a full replacement may involve paying a deductible depending on your state.

Unless you’ve filed several claims in a short period, a single windshield claim is unlikely to impact your premium. Still, it’s a good idea to double-check your specific policy and state rules so there aren’t any surprises.

My advice as far as filing a claim is that if you can pay for it out of pocket, especially if it's less than what your deductible is, then don't file a claim. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide, but smaller claims usually aren't worth having on your records if you're in a position to have the damage taken care of yourself. I hope this helps! That’s frustrating, and you aren't alone in your experience. How's the claims handling at American National?

Unfortunately, that kind of feedback shows up more than once with American National reviews—but it's not a cut-and-dry situation. In most cases, complaints come from hail or property claims, where the company uses independent adjusters instead of in-house staff. That’s pretty common with mid-sized …

How far back do insurance companies look?

Great question! While it can vary by carrier, most car insurance companies will charge (i.e. increase your premium) for any ticket or violation within the past 3 years. You typically won't be charged for anything that happened beyond three years ago, however, insurance companies will still pull fiv…

Does State Farm require you have a police report to file a claim?

You'll want to check with State Farm to make sure, but you shouldn't have to file a police report to make a claim. This is the case for most insurers, not just State Farm. It depends on the situation, though. Since only your son's car was damaged, things are slightly simpler than if other drivers w…
