Question

Is Farmers good for teen driver insurance?

My teenage daughter just got her license and I added her to my Farmers policy. The premium jump just about gave me a heart attack. Do they have any programs to help with teen drivers, or am I stuck paying sky-high rates until she turns 25? Are there companies geared toward young drivers that are more affordable?

You're not alone, and it isn't only Farmers customers seeing this. Adding a teen driver is one of the biggest premium jumps most families see, regardless of the insurance company. Farmers does have a few ways to help bring the cost down:

  • Good student discount: If your daughter keeps her grades up, you may qualify.
  • Driver training discount: Completing a certified driver’s ed course can cut costs.
  • Occasional driver setup: Listing her as an occasional driver on a shared family car is cheaper than giving her a car of her own.
  • Signal® app: Farmers’ telematics program tracks driving habits, and safe behavior can earn discounts.

As for whether other companies are “better” for teens — it really depends. Some insurers, like State Farm and Nationwide, are known for offering strong student discounts. Others, like GEICO, often come in cheaper for new drivers overall. The difference is usually in the details of the discounts and how your household’s driving record fits into their rating system.

A couple of extra tips:

  • Compare quotes every year or two, since teen rates can change quickly as your daughter gains experience.
  • Look into umbrella liability coverage if you want extra peace of mind while she’s learning.
  • Remind her that every ticket or fender bender will make those rates even higher — safe driving pays off in more ways than one.

The good news is that it doesn’t stay this expensive forever. As she builds experience and keeps a clean record, you should see the premium gradually ease down before she even hits 25. If I hit an object in the road, can I claim this under my comprehensive coverage?

Insurance companies consider hitting an object in the road to be an accident. Unfortunately, that means you will need to use your collision coverage, the incident will be considered your fault, and you'll likely see an increase in premium. I would recommend getting a few repair estimates first…

How far back do insurance companies look?

Great question! While it can vary by carrier, most car insurance companies will charge (i.e. increase your premium) for any ticket or violation within the past 3 years. You typically won't be charged for anything that happened beyond three years ago, however, insurance companies will still pul…
