Question

Will my Farmers roadside assistance provide towing up to 250 miles?

I am a rideshare driver and I have rideshare insurance and roadside assistance with Farmers. I took a customer on a very long trip away from my home, and my car broke down on the way back. Will I be covered to have my car towed back to my home?

Roadside assistance coverage can vary, even within the same company, so it depends on your exact Farmers policy. In general, most auto roadside assistance programs either:

  • Cover towing up to a certain dollar limit,
  • Limit towing to a set mileage (often around 15 miles), or
  • Only pay for towing to the nearest qualified repair facility.

Farmers’ roadside assistance typically falls into this model: towing to the nearest repair shop is included, and longer-distance tows may be available, but only up to your policy’s coverage limit. That means having your car hauled all the way back home may not be fully covered unless your policy specifies extended towing.

Since you’ll need to call Farmers to request service anyway, ask the representative to walk you through exactly what your roadside benefit includes. If it doesn’t cover a tow back home, you can usually still get covered for the shorter tow to a repair shop and then decide whether to pay out-of-pocket for the remaining distance.

💡 Tip for rideshare drivers: Because your work often takes you far from home, it can be worth asking Farmers about enhanced roadside coverage options or considering a third-party motor club membership (like AAA) that offers longer towing distances. That way, you’ll have peace of mind no matter how far your rides take you.

If I sell my car and cancel my insurance, will my rates be higher later on?

You are right — having a lapse in coverage will cause your rates to be higher in the future. I recommend getting a non-owners policy, which it sounds like Progressive is already offering to you. This is essentially a liability-only policy when you do not own a vehicle, or are between vehicle owners…

Thank you for reaching out to The Zebra!Car insurance can be very confusing, especially when it comes to who is listed on the title and who needs to be listed on the policy. If I have gap insurance and totaled my car, but there is no gap between insurance payment and remaining loan balance, do I get a refund?

Not all gap insurance is written in the same manner, so you may have to refer to your insurer to get more information. From my understanding, if you pay off the loan and didn't use gap insurance to do so, they will probably refund some premiums paid back to you. It doesn't hurt to call th…
