Question

MIP at 18, I am getting it dismissed and expunged. Do not have my license yet, will insurance be affected?

I was given a drinking citation (minor in possession charge) for underage drinking. I wasn’t driving or anything. Got a lawyer to go to court to get it dismissed, took a drug education class and paid for the expungement. It is in the process of getting expunged but that can take up to 6 more months. I do not have my license yet but wish to get it ASAP. Will this MIP affect the rate on insurance if I do get my license and will it affect the process? Should I wait until it is expunged?

MIP is a non-moving violation, which does not impact your insurance rates. When it comes to the cost, if you're around 18-20 you can expect your premium to be quite pricier than those paid by older folks. If possible, I recommend getting insurance under your parents' policy. There are many different factors that go into calculating your rate. The Zebra can quote you with several companies at once. You can also give us a call at 888-807-3823. Good luck and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

If I hit an object in the road, can I claim this under my comprehensive coverage?

Insurance companies consider hitting an object in the road to be an accident. Unfortunately, that means you will need to use your collision coverage, the incident will be considered your fault, and you'll likely see an increase in premium. I would recommend getting a few repair estimates first…
