Question

Why is my third-party claim with Kemper taking forever?

Kemper is the other driver’s insurance, and I’m getting nowhere. Liability is clear, but they’re dragging out my claim and not returning calls. How do I get them to move faster?

Unfortunately, this is a very common complaint with Kemper (especially if you're not their customer). They don’t have the same urgency with third-party claims because you’re not paying them. Even if liability is obvious, they may still take their time while they “review” it.

Here are a few ways to speed things up:

File through your own insurance if you have collision coverage.
This is the fastest way to get your car repaired. Your insurer fixes your car now and goes after Kemper later (that’s called subrogation). You may have to pay your deductible upfront, but you’ll usually get it reimbursed once Kemper pays your company back.

Send everything in writing
Follow up every phone call with an email so there’s a paper trail. Ask for:

  • Claim handler’s direct number
  • The claim supervisor’s contact
  • Written liability decision timeline

Use your state’s insurance department
If they ignore you for more than 15 business days, you can file a complaint with your state's Department of Insurance. That often gets a quick response because Kemper has to formally reply.

Ask about rental coverage
If Kemper delays liability acceptance, ask if they offer “without prejudice” rental coverage, as some insurers do while they investigate.

If I have an open claim on a totaled car, how do I handle the insurance?

There's a couple of things to think about. First, canceling the coverage on this vehicle will not cancel the claim. As long as the policy was active at the time of the accident (which it sounds like it was), you should be fine. Second, if your car is totaled, you can cancel your insurance if you a…
