Metromile vs AAA: Which is Better for You?
Compare rates from the top car insurance companies in your area.
Metromile or Auto Club (AAA): Which company is best for you?
The choice between AAA and Metromile car insurance is a tough one. Each of these insurers does business in a different way and comes with pros and cons. AAA — also called Auto Club — is a well-established and popular option, while Metromile is a much newer company that aims to appeal to younger drivers. Acclaimed as an innovator in the somewhat staid auto insurance industry, Metromile has shaken things up with its pay-per-mile model. This may appeal to urbanites who need a car occasionally but use other means of transportation for daily trips. AAA is popular thanks to its discount programs and coast-to-coast reach. AAA was founded in 1902, while Metromile is a relative newcomer, founded in 2011 in San Francisco. Which of these car insurance companies provides premiums and coverage to suit you? About | Metromile offers pay per mile car insurance that is ideal for people who don't drive a lot. You'll pay a low monthly rate, plus a charge based on the actual miles you drive. So if you don’t drive a lot, you can save a lot on car insurance. You can customize your coverage and select from the same options you're used to. Then, you'll plug in a small device into your car that counts your miles and lets you know what’s going on with your car at all times. At the end of the month, your bill will be a total of your base rate plus the number of miles you drive, so it can vary each month depending on how much you drive. Plus, you don’t have to worry about going “over” on miles. If you reach 250 miles (or 150 for New Jersey drivers) in one day, you won’t be charged for any more miles that day. | Auto Club provides its customers with customizable payment options, competitive rates and excellent features. |
Roadside Assistance | Metromile offers roadside assistance as an additional add-on to your insurance policy. This is designed to cover things like flat tires, being locked out of your vehicle, and immovable vehicles. | AAA offers three tiers of 24-hour Road Service: Classic, Plus and Premier, which all include towing, emergency starting, battery service, flat tire assistance, locksmith service, fuel delivery, and extrication/winching service. AAA membership covers you, not your vehicle, so you can call whether you are in your own car, a friend’s car, or a rental. Each AAA cardholder is entitled to four Roadside Assistance service calls or reimbursements per membership year at no charge. |
Additional Discounts | Metromile's primary additional benefit is that it caters to low-mileage or occasional drivers. For this reason, Metromile is a perfect fit for city drivers. | AAA offers an additional Garage Parking Discount Original Owner Discount, and maintains a wide-ranging rewards program for AAA members. |
