Question

Does AIG cover expensive cars for hurricanes and floods in Florida?

I have a Tesla and an older convertible that I keep at my house near Biscayne Bay. Every hurricane season I worry about flooding or storm damage. My current insurance doesn’t make me feel confident they’d cover the full value if something happened. Would AIG be any different?

Yes, AIG does cover cars against hurricane and flood damage, and they’re known for working with higher-value vehicles. But the bigger issue here isn’t just AIG — it’s how insurance works for storm damage in general.

Here’s what you need to know in plain terms:

  • Flood and hurricane damage fall under “comprehensive coverage.” If you only have liability (the minimum required by Florida), your car won’t be covered for storm damage at all.
  • Most standard insurance companies pay “actual cash value.” That means they’ll look at your car’s age and subtract depreciation before cutting a check. So if your convertible is 20 years old, the payout might be less than you expect — even if the car is in great shape.
  • Companies like AIG (and some others) may offer “agreed value.” That’s when you and the company decide on the car’s value ahead of time. If it’s totaled in a storm, you get that full amount, without arguing over depreciation.
  • Limits matter. Florida’s minimum requirements are very low. If you cause an accident or your car is badly damaged, those minimums might not come close to covering the costs. Higher-limit policies give you a bigger safety net.

So, AIG can be a good option if you want your Tesla or convertible protected at their full value and with fewer restrictions on repairs. But the main takeaway for anyone in Miami is: make sure you have comprehensive coverage, check how your car’s value would be calculated, and ask about higher limits so you’re not left short after a storm.

If you’re unsure, it can help to compare a few insurers side by side — including AIG and more standard companies — so you see what you’re really getting for the price.
