In my experience, it's always the rule that car insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver. So, although the person who hit your daughter wasn't the owner of the vehicle, their car insurance would still apply in this situation. Meaning, your daughter would be contacting their insurance company to begin the claims process. If my daughter caused less than $1,000 in damage to another car, should we still file a claim or pay out of pocket?

I would agree with your assumption. In Kentucky, an at-fault accident impacts rates by an average of $917 per year in 2016. Since the accident will impact her rate for 3 years, that's quite a bit more than the cost of the repair. I would recommend paying for the other driver's damage out …

If my Alabama registration tags expire, do I still have to carry insurance?

Alabama requires that registered vehicles must also be insured. If your registration tags expire and you want to renew them then you must have active auto insurance before the new tags will be issued. If you let the tags expire and you are no longer planning on driving the vehicle then you would no…

Does the name on the title affect car insurance rates?

No, your rates should not change by putting the car in your son's name if he is already listed on the policy. Who the car is registered under does not impact the rate at all. You just need to make sure all drivers are listed on the policy. Good luck and if you have any other questions, don…

Does my insurance cover the damage to trailer even though I wasn't hauling it?

The claim should be covered by your insurance company as long as your policy includes permissive use. Permissive use means that claims will be covered if you give someone (who doesn't drive the vehicle regularly or lives with you) permission to drive the vehicle. Keep in mind, when a claim is …
