If my Alabama registration tags expire, do I still have to carry insurance?

My registration expired last month and I want to cancel my insurance to save some money until I'm ready to register the car again. When I'm ready, how to I renew my tags?

Alabama requires that registered vehicles must also be insured. If your registration tags expire and you want to renew them then you must have active auto insurance before the new tags will be issued. If you let the tags expire and you are no longer planning on driving the vehicle then you would not need insurance. To renew your tags you will need to visit a registration office in your area.
