Question

Does Allstate raise rates even without claims?

I haven’t had a single homeowners claim, and my current company is increasing my homeowners insurance price. I'm thinking about moving to Allstate because of better service, but I’ve also heard they raise premiums a lot at renewal. I figure it's just happening across the board, since I hear a lot of people complaining about high rates everywhere, but I want to be sure it isn't something Allstate is known for, in case I switch to them.

Yes, rate increases are happening across the homeowners insurance market, and Allstate is not immune to that. So if your main concern is avoiding renewal increases entirely, switching to Allstate (or any company) is not a guaranteed solution.

Over the past few years, most large insurers have raised rates, even for homeowners with no claims. The cost to rebuild homes has gone up due to labor, materials, and weather-related losses. Those broader pressures affect nearly every company, including Allstate.

That said, Allstate does have a reputation in some customer reviews for noticeable renewal increases. Many policyholders mention rate bumps year over year, even without filing a claim. Whether that happens to you depends heavily on your ZIP code, your home’s age and condition, and overall loss trends in your area.

Where Allstate may stand out is in its agent network. Some homeowners value having a local agent who can walk through coverage, explain changes, and help adjust the policy if needed. That doesn’t prevent rate increases, but it can make them easier to understand and manage.

Before you switch, compare quotes carefully. Make sure dwelling limits, deductibles, and endorsements are the same. Ask the Allstate agent (or any other agency you talk to):

  • What factors are driving rates in my area?
  • How have renewal increases looked locally?
  • Are there discounts for bundling or home safety features?

The bottom line: rising premiums are common across the board. Allstate is not uniquely responsible for that trend, but it also is not insulated from it. If better service is your goal, it may be worth exploring. Just base your decision on detailed quotes, not assumptions about pricing stability. If I sell my car and cancel my insurance, will my rates be higher later on?

You are right — having a lapse in coverage will cause your rates to be higher in the future. I recommend getting a non-owners policy, which it sounds like Progressive is already offering to you.
