Question

Why would my Arbella premium increase if I haven’t filed any claims?

I’ve had Arbella for both home and auto for a few years and haven’t had any claims. This year, though, my homeowners premium went up more than I expected.

Nothing about my house has changed, so I’m trying to understand why the price would increase if I haven’t used the insurance at all.

Arbella, like most homeowners insurance companies, can raise premiums even if you haven’t filed a claim—and it’s usually tied to broader changes, not just your individual policy.

One of the biggest reasons is that the cost to repair or rebuild homes has gone up. Materials, labor, and construction costs have all increased, and insurers adjust their pricing to reflect that.

Weather also plays a role. If there have been more storm or weather-related claims in your area, that can affect rates across many policies, even for homeowners who haven’t filed claims themselves.

Arbella may also update things at renewal, such as:

  • Your home’s estimated rebuild cost
  • Local risk factors (like weather patterns)
  • Overall claims trends in your region

Even small adjustments in those areas can lead to noticeable changes in your premium.

If you want to understand your increase, it’s worth asking your agent:

  • What changed between last year and this year
  • Whether your coverage limits were updated
  • If there are discounts or adjustments available

The bottom line is that rate increases are often driven by market conditions, not just personal claims history, but it’s always worth reviewing your policy to be sure. I also suggest shopping around and comparing companies and rates at least once a year. Our agents are happy to help you with this if you want to look at other options that might be more affordable.

Does my son-in-law's military status (Marine) qualify me as USAA member?

USAA eligibility flows to spouses and children, not parents or in-lawsIt is my understanding that USAA eligibility flows "downstream" – which means you need to be a child or spouse of an established member to get a USAA policy. Therefore parents, or in your case in-laws, of USAA members are likely …

What is O&L coverage and why do I have it?

O and L stands for Ordinance and Law. Though your agent said that it wouldn't cover code upgrades, perhaps he meant that if a code went into law, your insurance isn't going to accept claims to upgrade the home and bring it up to code — unless your home suffers a loss. What this coverage does is tha…
