Question

Is my deck covered by my homeowners policy?

I just finished adding an attached deck to my home. After spending lots of money on materials and labor, I'm concerned about something happening to it. Will it be covered under my homeowners insurance? Is there anything I have to do?

Since the deck you recently had built is attached to your home, the structure should be covered under the "dwelling" portion of your homeowners insurance. If the deck were not attached to your home then it would be covered under the other structures portion of your policy. It's important to note that the specifics of how your policy covers your home is outlined in the policy contract, and the coverage for your deck applies the same way. You should notify your insurance company of any improvements to your property to make sure that you are properly insured and for an explanation of how your policy covers those improvements.

Will my renters insurance pay for me to stay in a hotel if my house is damaged?

Renters insurance is extremely valuable since it is often inexpensive and provides lots of coverage when things go wrong. Specifically in your situation, your renters policy should include a "loss of use" provision that would cover temporary living expenses if you weren't able to live in your home because of a covered loss.
