Question

Is my deck covered by my homeowners policy?

I just finished adding an attached deck to my home. After spending lots of money on materials and labor, I'm concerned about something happening to it. Will it be covered under my homeowners insurance? Is there anything I have to do?

Since the deck you recently had built is attached to your home, the structure should be covered under the "dwelling" portion of your homeowners insurance. If the deck were not attached to your home then it would be covered under the other structures portion of your policy. It's important to note that the specifics of how your policy covers your home is outlined in the policy contract, and the coverage for your deck applies the same way. You should notify your insurance company of any improvements to your property to make sure that you are properly insured and for an explanation of how your policy covers those improvements.

Does car insurance cover a uhaul?

Renting a U-haul is much like renting a car. Consider the size of the vehicle you will be renting. Generally speaking, if the vehicle has a full 1-ton towing capacity (normally designated as an F-350 or 3500 on the vehicle) or smaller then your policy will extend to cover that vehicle just like ren…

If I'm on the deed but not the mortgage, can I still be on the homeowners insurance?

Thanks for the question. I see no issue with you being on the insurance if you are on the deed to the property. The mortgage company will want to be listed as an interested party in the event of a claim payout. They will also want their client listed as a person on the insurance. Beyond that, there…

If my laptop was stolen from my car, how do I get it replaced?

Any damage to your car would be covered by your auto insurance policy, but personal property should be covered by your renters insurance policy, and that includes items inside your vehicle. Renters insurance covers theft and follows you even while you're not at home. Keep in mind that your ren…

Will homeowners insurance cover my riding lawn mower that caught on fire?

Yes, you can file a claim with your homeowners insurance but I would see if your lawnmower's warranty is still valid before you look into a claim. If you do decide to file a claim, it would be covered under personal property. Keep in mind that your deductible will apply, which means your insur…
