Question

Is GEICO home insurance worth it if another company writes the policy?

Should I get GEICO home when they just outsourced somewhere else? Is there any real benefit to combining (like discounts) if the purchase is the only time I deal with GEICO? I am with another insurer right now, but I am looking to switch. I just don't want to deal with complications if my auto and home are separate (even if they're both bought through GEICO).

When you buy homeowners insurance through GEICO, the policy is usually written by one of their partner insurers, not GEICO itself. GEICO acts more like an insurance marketplace or agency for home coverage. They handle the quote and purchase process, but the partner company is the one that actually underwrites the policy and manages claims.

So does it still make sense to combine home and auto through GEICO?

It can, depending on what you value most.

One of the main benefits is that you may qualify for a multi-policy discount on your GEICO auto insurance when you add a home policy through their partner network. Even though the home policy is issued by another company, GEICO’s system often recognizes the bundle and applies the discount to your auto premium.

In terms of day-to-day management, the policies may still be handled separately. Your auto policy stays with GEICO, while the partner insurer manages the homeowners policy and any claims. That means if you ever file a home claim, you’ll usually work directly with the company that issued the homeowners policy rather than GEICO.

For many homeowners, that setup isn’t a problem. But if your main goal is simplicity (one company handling everything) you might prefer an insurer that writes both home and auto policies itself.

Before switching, it’s worth asking GEICO a couple of practical questions:

  • Which company would underwrite the homeowners policy?
  • Would my auto policy receive a bundle discount?
  • Would billing or account management be combined in any way?

The key thing is that the quality of the homeowners insurer matters most, since that’s the company you’ll rely on if you ever have a claim.

So yes, bundling through GEICO can still provide savings. Just make sure you’re comfortable with the idea that the company protecting your home may be different from the one insuring your car.

What is O&L coverage and why do I have it?

O and L stands for Ordinance and Law. Though your agent said that it wouldn't cover code upgrades, perhaps he meant that if a code went into law, your insurance isn't going to accept claims to upgrade the home and bring it up to code — unless your home suffers a loss. What this coverage does is tha…

Do cash buyers need HO-1, HO-2, or HO-3 home insurance?

The main difference between HO-1, HO-2, and HO-3 policies is the number of "perils" (events like fire, wind, or theft) that the insurance company will cover. Since you are buying your home with cash, you aren't forced by a lender to pick a specific plan, but choosing the right home insurance policy…
