Question

Is a police report required when a parked car is hit?

My daughter was parked at work. When she got to her car after work, she saw that her car had been hit. She told her manager, but she did not file a police report. Is a police report required in order to be paid through an uninsured motorist claim? We are in Texas.

Texas law states you must file a police report if the accident resulted in physical injury (or death) or property damage exceeding least $1,000. If your daughter is filing an uninsured motorist claim (i.e., a hit and run), I recommend filing a police report. You can submit a Driver's Crash Report up to 10 days after the accident. Best of luck.

Will an unreported car accident affect my premium?

If you were never cited for the accident and never filed a claim, there should be no insurance record of your accident. Insurance companies generally run two reports when you sign up for new insurance — your motor vehicle report (MVR) and another for claims history (CLUE). If they're clean, th…

Can I add coverage after I've had an accident?

Unfortunately you cannot add collision coverage after an accident and then use that coverage for the accident; your coverage only becomes applicable for accidents that occur after you add the coverage - not before. The date of the accident is what they look at, not when you file the claim. At this …

Should I file a claim if I damaged my car backing out of the driveway but I only have liability?

If you only have liability coverage then you wouldn't be able to file a damage claim. Your policy would to have included collision coverage at the time of the incident for you to be able to get it repaired through your insurance provider. Unfortunately, you would not be able to add coverage af…
