Do I need to report a fix-it ticket when applying for new auto insurance?

As long as your license wasn't suspended as a result — or other violations that affect your driving record — you do not have to report fix-it tickets to your insurance company. Insurers typically will only rate against moving violations that show up on your motor vehicle record (MVR).

Will gap insurance pay out if I buy the salvaged vehicle from the insurance company?

Your gap coverage should still cover the $2,000 owed on the loan regardless of what happens after that. I would definitely check directly with your insurance company to make sure there is no stipulation that prevents this if you choose to buy back the salvage title.

If my car is determined a total loss in an accident, will my gap insurance cover the down payment used to secure my loan?

Gap insurance will only cover what is left on your loan after an insurance company pays out. Gap coverage is best purchased if you are going to have a difference between the loan amount and the value of the vehicle.

How do I get a false claim off my insurance report?

I would call my prior insurance company (your renters provider) showing the false claim and see how they have it marked. I would also have them send confirmation that the claim was dropped and not paid out.

How can an insurance company add an accident to your record that never happened?

I would contact the insurance company that listed the claim and start a dispute. They really shouldn't be able to put you down for this claim.

If the repair costs more than the car without an accident, will it still get totaled?

Your insurance company will never get involved in helping you repair your vehicle if there was no accident or other loss that caused the damage. Since there was no accident, you are on the hook for paying for your vehicle's repairs.

Can a lender dictate what my deductible is?

Unfortunately, the terms of your loan can dictate what your coverage deductibles must be. Your lienholder may not necessarily notice right away if you change your deductible, but if they catch on they will add force-placed insurance, also known as collateral protection insurance, as a part of your monthly payments.

If I have gap insurance and totaled my car, but there is no gap between insurance payment and remaining loan balance, do I get a refund?

Not all gap insurance is written in the same manner, so you may have to refer to your insurer to get more information. From my understanding, if you pay off the loan and didn't use gap insurance to do so, they will probably refund some premiums paid back to you.

What is O&L coverage and why do I have it?

O and L stands for Ordinance and Law. Though your agent said that it wouldn't cover code upgrades, perhaps he meant that if a code went into law, your insurance isn't going to accept claims to upgrade the home and bring it up to code — unless your home suffers a loss.

If I move to Florida from Virginia for college, would I have to change my plates and get Florida auto insurance?

Florida law states that if you are in the state for over six months of the year, you need to register and tag the vehicle there. To do so, you will require PIP (as Florida is a no-fault state) and liability insurance.
