Question

How do I cancel my Progressive insurance?

I want to cancel my Progressive insurance policy and switch to my boyfriend's company. I'm not sure how to do this because I've never canceled car insurance before. Is there anything I need to know or do before I cancel?

Canceling a car insurance policy is fairly simple with Progressive, but there are some things to keep in mind, one of which is avoiding a coverage gap. If you’re switching providers, make sure your new policy is active before canceling Progressive to avoid a lapse in coverage. If you’re unsure about timing, consider overlapping your new and old policy by a day or two to ensure a smooth transition. Even a one-day gap could result in:

  • Higher rates in the future – Insurance companies may view a lapse as a risk factor, leading to higher premiums when you apply for a new policy.
  • Legal issues – If your state requires continuous auto insurance, even a brief lapse could result in fines, license suspension, or registration penalties.
  • Denied claims – If an accident occurs during a coverage gap, you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket for damages or liability.

Here are a few other important things to consider if you want to cancel your car insurance policy:

  • Canceling online vs. calling: In most cases, you’ll need to call Progressive to cancel since they may want to confirm details or try to keep your business. But if you have renters or business insurance, you might be able to cancel online. If you’d rather avoid the phone call, log in to your Progressive account first to see if online cancellation is an option for your policy.
  • Possible fees: Good news—auto policies usually don’t have cancellation fees! But if you have multiple policies (home or renters and auto) or any unique coverages or situations, it’s worth asking if any fees apply so you’re not caught off guard.
  • Refunds: If you prepaid your policy, you might get a refund for any unused coverage, but it’s not always guaranteed. Fees, timing, or renewal dates could impact how much (if anything) you get back. When canceling, be sure to ask how the refund is calculated and when you can expect to see it.

No matter how you cancel, and regardless of the company, be sure you receive an email or written documentation proving your cancellation date. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

If I hit a pole at a gas station and damaged my car will my policy cover the cost of fixing it?

In this situation, your policy will need to include collision coverage in order for the damage to be covered. Will The Hartford raise rates with the first accident?

That’s a great question, and one we hear a lot. The Hartford does offer accident forgiveness in many states, which means your very first at-fault accident won’t automatically increase your premium. If someone keyed my car and I file a claim, will my insurance rates go up?

I'm sorry to hear this happened to your vehicle! I would recommend getting a repair estimate before filing a claim so you've got plenty of information to base your decision on. This damage to your car would be considered an act of vandalism, which falls under comprehensive coverage. Check your decl…
