Question

Does Erie offer as many services as bigger companies?

I've been with a huge insurance company since college and want to switch to a smaller, more personalized one. I've heard good things about Erie, but do they offer the same things a big company does when it comes to coverage, discounts, bundling, etc.? Thanks!

Generally speaking, yes — Erie Insurance is a well-regarded company that offers many of the same core coverages as larger national carriers. That said, each insurer structures policies a little differently, so it’s important to review the fine print before making a switch. Erie offers standard auto and home insurance, along with more specialized options like coverage for ATVs, boats, and other recreational vehicles. They also provide several types of life insurance and Medicare supplement plans, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of needs.

Like most major insurers, Erie includes a variety of discounts to help lower your premiums, some of which are:

  • Bundling discounts for combining home and auto policies
  • Paid-in-full savings
  • Youthful Driver Discount, which applies to unmarried drivers under 21 living with their parents — a helpful perk for families with teen or college-age drivers

They also offer a telematics program called YourTurn®, which tracks safe driving habits through a mobile app and rewards users with gift cards. It’s a more gamified approach than the typical percentage-based safe driving discount and can be an appealing feature for drivers who want a more interactive experience.

Erie supports its customers with digital tools, including a mobile app and a repair shop locator on its website. While their tech may be a bit more traditional compared to some larger insurers, it covers the basics effectively.

Downsides to consider:
Erie operates in only 12 states and Washington, D.C., which limits availability across much of the U.S. However, for customers in areas where Erie is available, the company has earned a strong reputation — including a top ranking in J.D. Power’s 2024 Overall Customer Satisfaction Index, ahead of many larger national carriers. That high level of customer satisfaction is a promising sign if you're considering making the switch.

What's the difference between an insurance carrier and an insurance agency?

Great question! The word "carrier" in terms of insurance is just a synonym for company. An insurance carrier is the insurance company that covers your vehicle and is listed on your policy (e.g. Allstate, State Farm, etc.). An insurance "agency" is a business that sells insurance…
