Question

Does Erie offer as many services as bigger companies?

I've been with a huge insurance company since college and want to switch to a smaller, more personalized one. I've heard good things about Erie, but do they offer the same things a big company does when it comes to coverage, discounts, bundling, etc.? Thanks!

Generally speaking, yes — Erie Insurance is a well-regarded company that offers many of the same core coverages as larger national carriers. That said, each insurer structures policies a little differently, so it’s important to review the fine print before making a switch. Erie offers standard auto and home insurance, along with more specialized options like coverage for ATVs, boats, and other recreational vehicles. They also provide several types of life insurance and Medicare supplement plans, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of needs.

Like most major insurers, Erie includes a variety of discounts to help lower your premiums, some of which are:

  • Bundling discounts for combining home and auto policies
  • Paid-in-full savings
  • Youthful Driver Discount, which applies to unmarried drivers under 21 living with their parents — a helpful perk for families with teen or college-age drivers

They also offer a telematics program called YourTurn®, which tracks safe driving habits through a mobile app and rewards users with gift cards. It’s a more gamified approach than the typical percentage-based safe driving discount and can be an appealing feature for drivers who want a more interactive experience.

Erie supports its customers with digital tools, including a mobile app and a repair shop locator on its website. While their tech may be a bit more traditional compared to some larger insurers, it covers the basics effectively.

Downsides to consider:
Erie operates in only 12 states and Washington, D.C., which limits availability across much of the U.S. However, for customers in areas where Erie is available, the company has earned a strong reputation — including a top ranking in J.D. Power’s 2024 Overall Customer Satisfaction Index, ahead of many larger national carriers. That high level of customer satisfaction is a promising sign if you're considering making the switch.

Thank you for reaching out to The Zebra! This is an excellent question. There are very few carriers in the state of Florida that will write that high of liability coverage. The insurance companies that we offer here at The Zebra will offer up to 250/500.  What this means is if you are at fault for …

What is Erie's Rate Lock and will it save me money?

Rate lock doesn’t mean your bill is frozen forever. Erie’s Rate Lock is designed to keep your premium steady at renewal, even if you file a claim or if overall rates in Baltimore rise. That’s a big difference from most insurers, where you can see increases every year no matter how clean your record…

If I backed into another person's car (which was sitting in their driveway), should I file a claim if repairs are estimated to be $2,500?

Hello, Since there is no damage to your vehicle, you would not need to file a claim. However, the person that you hit has the option to file a claim. You can offer to pay for the damages out of pocket to avoid the accident going on your record. Ultimately, it is up to the other party as to whether …

What's the difference between an insurance carrier and an insurance agency?

Great question! The word "carrier" in terms of insurance is just a synonym for company. An insurance carrier is the insurance company that covers your vehicle and is listed on your policy (e.g. Allstate, State Farm, etc.). An insurance "agency" is a business that sells insurance…
