Question

I have liability coverage only and I hit a highway median. Am I covered for any damages?

I was driving and I hit the median on the highway. No damage occurred to the median as stated in the report, but my insurance is lapsed. I am covered under liability so If I pay my insurance and my insurance doesn’t have to pay for any damages, is that considered fraud? Will the state still sue me as an uninsured driver if I paid it on the same day?

Liability insurance only covers damages you directly cause. It never covers your own property. If the state seeks damages and the insurance was not active you do open yourself up to potential lawsuits for them to collect their damages.

If I hit a tire in the road, is that considered a comprehensive claim?

This accident would actually be paid out under your collision coverage because you collided with the tire. Because you only damaged your own vehicle in this single-vehicle collision, it would also be considered an at-fault collision claim. What you should think about is the rate increase you will p…

Should I get my insurance company involved or pay for the damage myself if I backed into a tree?

Ultimately it will depend on your deductible and the extent of the damage. Unfortunately, backing into a tree will be considered an "at-fault" accident if you file a claim with Amica. Our most recent State of Insurance report shows that at-fault accidents increase rates by about $450/year…
