Pekin's service with big claims

I switched to Pekin Insurance two years ago because their quote was noticeably lower than my previous carrier. Agent seemed friendly and bundled my house and car for me. But when I actually needed to file a claim after a tree fell on my garage, things slowed down. The adjuster didn’t call for nearly a week (I had to keep leaving messages), and the final payout felt lower than I expected. Is this just typical for any company when you've got a big claim, or is this a one-off?

This sounds on par for Pekin, but also for a lot of other regional companies. They tend to shine when it comes to pricing and the basics. Most people who rarely file claims report smooth renewals, easy billing, and friendly agents.

Where the mixed feedback for Pekin comes in is with bigger or more complicated claims. Some reviewers mention delays in getting adjusters assigned, slower follow-ups, or smaller-than-expected payouts. That’s not unique to Pekin (many regional insurers rely on smaller local networks), but it’s something to keep in mind if you want fast, highly digital support.

The upside is that Pekin is financially solid and does respond well once you’re in touch with the right person. Staying in contact with your agent, keeping records, and being proactive can make the process much smoother if something major happens. There are a lot of benefits to local agents who know the area (and the risks) you deal with on a regular basis. They can also help personalize coverage.

So overall, Pekin is a good fit for drivers or homeowners who want fair pricing and solid everyday service. Just know that when a big claim comes along, you might need a little extra patience and follow-up. It's also good to keep in mind that customers don't really get to see the full spectrum of service from an insurance company until they file a claim, and this is normal regardless of the company you work with.

Do I need a police report to file a claim with insurance if I damaged my own vehicle?

You do not need a police report to open a claim. Since it was a single-vehicle accident, you will be charged as at-fault if the claim is paid, which would result in a higher premium. I would get an estimate for the damage and see if it's worth filing a claim for, and possibly pay out-of-pocket…

It is my understanding that USAA eligibility flows "downstream" – which means you need to be a child or spouse of an established member to get a USAA policy. Therefore parents, or in your case in-laws, of USAA members are likely not eligible to get their own policy. This applies to all in…
