Question

Is it worth filing an insurance claim for small roof damage?

We had some wind come through and it pulled up a few shingles on our roof. It’s not major damage, but it’s enough that it needs to be fixed. I have my home insurance through Penn National, but I’m on the fence about filing a claim. The repair doesn’t seem huge, and I’ve heard that even small claims can affect your rates later.

Is it worth using insurance for something like this, or am I better off just paying out of pocket? I don't even want to call and ask if it ends up on my insurance record or something.

With Penn National, like most insurers, it’s worth pausing before filing a claim for smaller roof repairs, especially if you’re not sure the damage is serious enough to justify it. A good place to start is your deductible. If the repair cost is close to or below that amount, insurance may not pay much, if anything.

If you call and ask about a claim, will it go on your record?

In some cases, simply asking a general coverage question is not the same as filing a claim. But if the conversation turns into a formal claim report or claim inquiry tied to your property, it could still be documented by the company.

Before filing a claim, it's a good idea to:

  • Get a roofer’s estimate
  • Take photos/video of the damage
  • Review your deductible and policy coverage
  • Ask your agent how to discuss the issue without opening a claim

If the damage is minor and affordable, it's probably worth paying out of pocket. But if there’s a chance the damage could lead to leaks or get worse, it may be worth taking further steps.

The key is to be careful about how you ask. If you want basic guidance, you can start by saying you’re looking for general information and are not ready to file a claim. That can help you understand your options before anything becomes formal.

So yes, the concern is real. Asking questions is fine, but it’s smart to know the difference between a casual coverage question and a documented claim inquiry before you make that call.
