Question

Is it worth getting State Farm in fire regions?

I live in an area where wildfire risk is becoming more of a concern. We've had a few fairly close to my property. I’m considering State Farm for homeowners insurance, but are they still writing policies in fire-risk areas, or pulling back like some companies? It's pretty frustrating when it's not like wildfires are my fault, and I do what I can to protect the house, but it seems like so many companies just don't want to deal with it.

Many homeowners in wildfire-prone parts of Colorado are asking the same question right now. State Farm currently offers homeowners insurance in many areas, but like most insurers, the company periodically reviews where it writes new policies.

Across the state, insurers have been dealing with more expensive claims from hail, wind, and wildfire damage, which has pushed many companies to tighten underwriting or pause new policies.

Wildfire risk has become a particularly sensitive issue for insurers. Colorado has hundreds of thousands of homes in moderate-to-high wildfire risk areas, and rebuilding costs after fires have climbed dramatically. That’s why some companies are raising premiums, adding mitigation requirements, or limiting where they’ll write new policies.

The important thing to understand is that this isn’t about fault. Homeowners often do everything right, clearing brush, using fire-resistant materials, and maintaining defensible space. But insurers price risk based on regional patterns, not just individual properties.

If you’re shopping in a wildfire-risk area like parts of Douglas County, your options may include:

  • Insurers that are still writing selectively in Colorado
  • Policies that require wildfire mitigation steps (like defensible space)
  • Higher deductibles or premiums tied to fire risk

In the worst case, some homeowners who can’t find standard coverage turn to the state’s FAIR Plan, which is designed as a last-resort insurance option.

Wildfire risk is making the insurance market more complicated, but that doesn’t mean coverage is impossible to find. It just takes a little more comparison shopping than it used to. Availability can vary even within the same county. Our agents here at The Zebra are happy to help you shop around and find a good option for your location.
