Question

Will Allstate cover my flooded car?

I am a customer with Allstate (I have never filed any claims), and the area I live in has been seeing a lot of storms lately. I didn't realize my sunroof had been open during one of our huge rains lately, and the inside of my car was soaked! The electronics are still working, but the upholstery is probably ruined. Is this covered since it was a storm and not my fault? Or is it my fault for not making sure everything was closed?

Whether Allstate covers the damage depends on your policy and how it defines negligence. If you only have liability coverage, this won’t be covered—liability only pays for damage you cause to others, not your own vehicle.

You might be covered if you have comprehensive coverage, since it typically includes non-collision events like storms. However, because the sunroof was left open, Allstate could consider the damage preventable and deny the claim based on negligence. It really depends on whether the claims adjuster sees it as a minor mistake or clear negligence, especially if a storm was expected.

The good news is that Allstate generally has a strong reputation for customer satisfaction. They receive relatively few complaints and are financially solid when it comes to paying claims. That said, even with a good insurer, you could still be responsible for the damage depending on how your situation is assessed.

Before filing a claim, consider:

If the cost isn’t much more than your deductible, paying out of pocket might make more sense rather than risk a premium hike.

Still unsure? Reach out to your agent or review your policy’s fine print. Good luck, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Do I need a police report to file a claim with insurance if I damaged my own vehicle?

You do not need a police report to open a claim. Since it was a single-vehicle accident, you will be charged as at-fault if the claim is paid, which would result in a higher premium. I would get an estimate for the damage and see if it's worth filing a claim for, and possibly pay out-of-pocket to a…
