Question

Does home insurance cover damage from ice dams in the winter?

I live in Massachusetts and every winter we deal with snow piling up on the roof. A neighbor had an ice dam last year that caused water to leak into their walls, and it got expensive fast.

I’m considering Arbella for homeowners insurance, but I’m not sure how something like that is handled. If an ice dam causes water damage inside the house, would that typically be covered?

WithArbella homeowners insurance, damage from ice dams can be covered, but it depends on how the damage happened.

In many cases, if an ice dam leads to sudden water damage inside your home, like water leaking into walls or ceilings, that damage may be covered. Insurance is generally designed to handle unexpected damage, even if it starts from something like snow buildup.

Where it can get tricky is maintenance.

If the insurer determines the issue was caused by lack of upkeep, like poor insulation, clogged gutters, or long-term roof issues, they may limit or deny the claim. Ice dams often fall into that gray area between weather and maintenance.

That’s why prevention matters. Things like proper insulation, ventilation, and clearing snow buildup can reduce your risk.

If you’re considering Arbella and ice is a concern for you, it’s a good idea to ask:

  • How they handle ice dam-related claims
  • What conditions might affect coverage
  • Whether there are steps you should take to prevent issues

The key takeaway is that resulting water damage may be covered, but the cause and condition of the home play a big role in how the claim is handled. I also suggest comparing a few different companies before settling on one. Our agents are happy to help you shop around to find the best coverage for your needs.
