Question
Can my insurer deduct depreciation and a deductible from the same claim?
My insurance company gave me an estimate and deducted 50% from three covered items for depreciation, then also took out my $500 deductible. So I'm only getting about $1,500 total. which is half the value of my stuff. Can they really take depreciation AND a deductible? Seems like I'm the one getting the bad deal here.
Answer
Although it feels unfair, it's normal for home insurance to subtract both the deductible and the depreciation of an item if you are covered on an ACV (Actual Cash Value) basis. Your deductible is the fixed amount you agreed to pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. That applies to every covered claim regardless of anything else. Depreciation is separate: it reflects the fact that your covered items weren't brand new at the time of the loss.
This means your insurance company will cover the item's value, but they take depreciation (loss of value over time) into account when calculating your payout. The 50% depreciation on your three items is on the higher end, but it isn't necessarily wrong. Depreciation is calculated based on the item's age, condition, and expected useful life. Older items can depreciate significantly, and 50% isn't unusual for items several years old.
RCV vs. ACV
Under an actual cash value policy, your insurer pays what those items were worth at the time of the loss, not what it would cost to replace them new. So if a ten-year-old appliance gets damaged, you're not getting the cost of a brand-new one.
The way to avoid this in the future is to have replacement cost value coverage rather than actual cash value. With RCV, you can get back the recoverable depreciation, which is the amount withheld from a payout. So, your insurer may give you a payment upfront, then another one once you've completed the repairs or replacements, then you can get another payout with the difference.
Typically, a home insurance policy with ACV does cost less than RCV, so keep that in mind if you decide to change your policy going forward.
If you feel the depreciation amounts are miscalculated, you have the right to dispute them. Start by asking your insurer for an itemized breakdown of how each figure was calculated. Insurance companies each handle this a little differently, so it's worth a direct conversation with your insurer to understand exactly what you're entitled to under your specific coverage. If you've got receipts/photos, or other documentation about an item's value, that can help.
Good luck with the claim! If you've got more questions, don't be afraid to ask.
