Why does my EV cost more to insure than my old car?

I traded in my old gas car for a new electric vehicle and my insurance premium jumped a lot more than I expected. My driving record is clean and nothing else changed. Why is my EV so much more expensive to insure?

You're right that a clean record and a newer car can help keep rates lower, but electric vehicles are just more expensive to insure. That might feel really personal, but it's actually about the car itself.

The biggest factor is repair cost. When an EV is in a collision, the repairs are more complex and more expensive than a traditional gas vehicle. EVs require extensive sensor and software recalibration after almost any significant impact, and they rely heavily on manufacturer parts rather than cheaper aftermarket alternatives. Labor costs are higher too, since not every shop is equipped to work on EVs and those that are often charge a premium for the specialized training involved.

The battery is its own consideration. EV batteries are expensive to diagnose, repair, or replace, and even a moderate collision can raise questions about battery integrity that extend the repair timeline and cost significantly. Insurers price for that risk.

EVs also tend to be heavier than gas vehicles of similar size, which can increase the severity of damage in an accident, to your car and potentially to others. This isn't something most of us would ever really think about when shopping for an efficient new car, but it's a factor.

The good news is that as EVs become more common, repair infrastructure is improving and costs are starting to stabilize in some markets (although inflation and tariffs aren't helping matters right at this moment). A few things worth asking about when you shop: some insurers have more competitive EV rates than others, and telematics programs that reward safe driving can help offset the higher base rate. It's also worth comparing quotes across multiple carriers since EV pricing varies more than it does for gas vehicles right now.

You said you've got a clean record, and keeping that up is one of the best ways to avoid rate increases. Keep driving safely, avoid claims when you can, and shop around regularly for better rates. Our agents can also help you out if you want to look at quotes from multiple companies. I hope this helps!
