Question

Does insurance cover injuries that happen at your house?

This might be a dumb question, but I honestly don’t know the answer. I have a Lemonade policy for my place in Chicago, and we have people over pretty often. If someone slipped on the stairs (it's a brownstone style with a lot of stairs) or got hurt in my home, would my homeowners insurance help cover that? Or is that something separate I’d need to think about?

That’s not a dumb question at all; this is exactly the kind of situation homeowners' insurance is meant to help with, with Lemonade and other insurance companies.

With any homeowners policy, there’s usually a section called personal liability coverage. That part of the policy can help if someone gets hurt in your home and you’re found responsible. So if a guest slips on the stairs, your insurance may help cover things like medical bills, legal costs, or a settlement if it turns into a claim.

Most policies also include a smaller amount of medical payments coverage. This can help pay for minor injuries, even if no one blames you or files a lawsuit.

That said, there are limits. Coverage usually applies to accidents, not intentional harm. And it may not cover every situation. For example, some policies have special rules around things like trampolines , certain dogs, or home businesses.

So the short answer is: yes, your homeowners insurance may help if someone gets hurt at your house. You usually do not need a separate policy just for having guests over.

Still, it’s a good idea to check your Lemonade policy for two things:

  • Your liability limit
  • Your medical payments limit

If you have people over often, or just want extra peace of mind, you might also ask whether your current liability limit is high enough.

So no, it’s not a separate thing most homeowners need to buy from scratch. It’s usually already built into the policy, as long as the injury falls under covered liability. I hope this helps!
