Question

Does car insurance cover an accident with a permit driver?

My girlfriend has a valid Arizona learner's permit and was driving my insured vehicle with a licensed driver in the passenger seat. She lives with me but does not regularly drive the vehicle; it was her first time driving it because she is learning. We were involved in an accident today (not a bad one, though), and I haven't called the insurance company yet. Should it be covered?

This depends on a few factors, so it’s worth being prepared for different outcomes when you call. Ultimately, your specific car insurance carrier and policy will determine the coverage.

Most auto policies include permissive use coverage for occasional drivers, but it’s generally designed for people who don’t live in your household. Since your girlfriend lives with you, some insurers may treat her as a household member who should have been listed on the policy rather than as a permissive user, and that distinction can affect coverage.

That said, she has a learner’s permit rather than a full license. Most carriers extend coverage to supervised permit holders as long as a licensed adult is present, which was the case here so it works in your favor.

Where this lands will depend on your specific policy language and your insurer’s guidelines. Call your insurer as soon as possible, and be straightforward about the full situation.

One thing to think about is the severity and details of the accident; you mentioned it wasn't bad. If the damage is minor and fixing it would cost less than (or close to) your deductible, filing a claim might not make sense. An at-fault accident can affect your rates in Arizona for up to three to five years, so if you can pay out of pocket that could be a cheaper option in the long run.

Going forward, the simplest solution for your girlfriend is to be added to your policy as a listed driver while she finishes her permit stage. It removes the gray area entirely and ensures she’s covered. I hope this helps, and don’t be afraid to ask your insurer questions if you don’t understand something when you talk to them; that’s what they’re there for!
