Can I manage everything online with Shelter?

Hi there, I’m used to doing everything online: paying bills, changing coverage, even filing claims. I’ve been looking at Shelter, but I’m not sure if their app and website are as good as bigger companies like GEICO, who I was with before. Can I manage everything digitally with them, or do I end up having to call an agent when I've got something to change?

Shelter does have an app and an online account system, but they’re not as modern or flexible as some of the big national carriers. You can do the basics — things like paying your bill, pulling up ID cards, or filing a claim online. But when it comes to adjusting your coverage, adding a driver, or changing vehicles, most of those updates still go through an agent.

If you’re used to a fully digital setup, companies like GEICO, Progressive, or State Farm usually have more robust apps where you can do almost everything without calling. On the flip side, some people actually prefer Shelter’s agent-first approach, since it gives them a direct contact instead of navigating a call center.

If digital convenience is high on your list, you might want to weigh whether you’d rather have everything at your fingertips through an app, or if having a local person to call feels more valuable to you.

If you aren't sure what the best fit might be, I definitely recommend shopping around and getting quotes from multiple companies. Working with an independent agent or broker (such as our in-house agents here at The Zebra) is a great way to navigate everything companies offer these days. I hope this helps!

What's the difference between an insurance carrier and an insurance agency?

Great question! The word "carrier" in terms of insurance is just a synonym for company. An insurance carrier is the insurance company that covers your vehicle and is listed on your policy (e.g. Allstate, State Farm, etc.). An insurance "agency" is a business that sells insurance…

Is Mile Auto legit?

Yep — Mile Auto is a real insurance company, just a newer one that focuses on pay-per-mile coverage. Instead of using a tracking device or GPS, they have you take a quick photo of your odometer each month to report mileage. That photo helps calculate your monthly bill, which includes a small base r…

Mile Auto or regular insurance?

Mile Auto is still "real" car insurance, just billed differently. Instead of paying a flat premium like you do with traditional insurance, you pay a base monthly rate plus a per-mile fee. That’s why it can be such a good deal for low-mileage drivers. With regular insurance, you pay the same amount e…

Should I contact the police and insurance company days after I rear ended a car?

It is unlikely that the other driving contacting the police days after the accident will result in any citation. Unless they were called to the scene, they probably won't even be able to write an accident report. In the majority of rear-end crashes, the driver in the back is normally considere…
