Question
Do I need international motorcycle insurance?
I‘m looking for motorcycle insurance which accepts an international driver license. I‘m from Switzerland and have only an IDL. I want to buy a motorcycle in the US and use it during the holidays (approximately 6 weeks/year). To register the bike I need a insurance but I don't have a US drivers license, only my Swiss driving licence and an International driving license. So I‘m looking for an insurance company which will issue a policy on an IDP.
Answer
Several companies will insure you with an International driver's license. Remember that most companies will add a surcharge to the policy because they cannot verify your driving history. The surcharge will vary by company and typically they will require you to show proof of your International license.
Motorcycle insurance is different from car insurance but several companies offer it. I would start with a company such as Dairyland, which specializes in motorcycles and will accept an international license. Thanks for reaching out and if you have any additional questions don't hesitate to ask.
