Question

Is it risky to buy home insurance from an online-only company?

I keep seeing Kin pop up when I’m looking for homeowners insurance, and the price is definitely appealing. But I’m a little skeptical. Everything seems to be online, no local office, no agent I can walk into. Is going with an online-only company like Kin a risk, or is this just the new normal? Florida doesn't have that many options that are affordable, so it feels a little too good to be true.

Kin Insurance is designed to be an online-first insurance company, and for many homeowners, that’s not necessarily a bad thing; it’s just a different way of doing things.

The biggest difference is that instead of working through a local agent, you’re managing your policy digitally, whether that’s getting a quote, making changes, or filing a claim.

For some people, that’s a plus. It can be faster, more convenient, and sometimes less expensive. But it also means you won’t have a local office or dedicated agent to walk into if you have questions.

That’s where it comes down to you comfort level as a customer. From a coverage standpoint, a policy from Kin is still a real insurance policy. It’s regulated by the state and designed to cover the same types of risks as traditional insurers.

Where you may notice a difference is in:

  • How customer support works
  • How claims are communicated and managed
  • How much guidance you get during the process

If you’re comfortable handling things online and don’t mind reaching out through digital channels, it can work well. If you prefer a more hands-on experience with a local agent, a traditional insurer might be a better fit.

The important thing is not just how you buy the policy, but how confident you feel using it if something goes wrong. And you're right about Florida, sometimes it can be challenging to find a good option at an affordable price point. You can always reach out to our agents here at The Zebra, and they'd be happy to help you shop around for other options.

Mile Auto or regular insurance?

Mile Auto is still "real" car insurance, just billed differently. Instead of paying a flat premium like you do with traditional insurance, you pay a base monthly rate plus a per-mile fee.
