Clearcover is a car insurance company founded in 2016. Describing itself as the “digital insurance for the digital consumer,” the company places a focus on technology and customer service. Through its mobile app, Clearcover promises an easy claims process and affordable auto insurance rates. For those wanting a personalized agent experience, Clearcover now works with independent agents. Drivers without a smartphone are not encouraged to seek coverage from this company. Clearcover is a relative newcomer in the insurance space, though the company has recently expanded its presence to ten U.S. states.

Is Clearcover a good insurance company?

The majority of The Zebra's review incorporates how well Clearcover scores in terms of customer service. In order to determine that we looked at the following third-party ratings.

BBB Customer Reviews: 3.35/5

  • Clearcover has a 3.35/5 rating from Better Business Bureau customers[1]

Complaint Index: Above average

  • The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) receives Above average
     customer complaints for Clearcover[2]

Financial Stability: A (Exceptional)

  • Clearcover received a financial stability rating of A (Exceptional) from Demotech[3]

The Zebra Customer Satisfaction Survey

Alongside third-party ratings, The Zebra uses our own customer satisfaction survey results to rate insurance companies. Feedback from real customers indicated which auto insurance companies ranked highest in certain categories. However, we did not collect enough data on Clearcover for it to be included.

How much does Clearcover insurance cost?

Information on Clearcover average premiums is limited, which makes it hard to provide an accurate review and calculate a fair rating.

It's important to remember that several personal factors are considered when policies are written, and premiums will vary based on things like age, driving history, geographic location and vehicle type. It's worth getting a quote on auto insurance in your area to see if Clearcover can offer coverage within your budget.

Discounts offered

While Clearcover doesn’t list very many car insurance discounts on its website, the company indicates that a number of discounts are baked into each quote based on the customer's driving profile. Essentially, Clearcover aims to offer drivers the lowest possible rate at the onset of each policy.

  • Active military personnel discount: Clearcover offers service members a 15% discount. Active duty armed service members in Louisiana receive 25% off on their insurance premiums, as do their children under 25.

The company advises that drivers can maintain lower rates by keeping a safe driving record, paying their insurance premium upfront and investing in certain vehicle safety features. Learn more about Clearcover's discount policies here.

What types of coverage does Clearcover offer?

Clearcover provides all the auto insurance options that you would expect from most major carriers, including bodily injury and property damage liability, medical payments, comprehensivecollision coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Clearcover doesn’t have an extensive list of additional coverages (otherwise known as endorsements) but many drivers may consider the following coverage add-ons helpful:

  • Rideshare coverage: Clearcover provides rideshare coverage for Uber or Lyft drivers. However, this endorsement does not extend to delivery driver services such as Uber Eats, Doordash or Grubhub.
  • Alternate transportation: Though many other carriers offer similar coverage in the form of rental car reimbursement, Clearcover has expanded this coverage somewhat, providing a daily allowance for transportation costs after a covered claim that renders your vehicle undrivable. This covers costs associated with public transportation, ridesharing services, or rental cars.
  • Roadside assistance: Roadside assistance can help if you find yourself stranded due to a mechanical or electrical malfunction. This typically covers towing, flat tires, dead batteries and similar circumstances.

Clearcover mobile

As a technology-driven insurance company, Clearcover would be remiss not to include a mobile app.  The app boasts high reviews from both the Apple Store (4.7 out of 5 stars) and Google Play (4.6 out of 5 stars) as of February 2024. Clearcover also touts an award for outstanding achievement in mobile development.

The Clearcover app is rich with features and relatively easy to use. Capabilities include the following:

Through "Clear Claims," the company indicates that claims can be filed 24/7 through the app and that certain eligible claims may even be paid out in 30 minutes or less. After submitting your claim, policyholders are contacted by a claims adjuster to continue with the next steps. While Clearcover says that the current record for claim payment is an astounding seven minutes, the company says most claims are settled within one week.

Clearcover insurance review: Summary

Clearcover is a growing company and a promising new player in the insurance space. Some may find the company’s young age worrisome, as Clearcover does not yet have outside ratings from trusted sources such as J.D. Power or AM Best. However, Clearcover's customer reviews are largely favorable and its rating from the Better Business Bureau is decent. Without average rates and limited information on coverages, it's difficult to say if Clearcover is right for your next insurance provider.

Methodology — how The Zebra reviews insurance companies

The team of insurance experts at The Zebra considers the company's standing in five main categories to come up with an overall rating. These metrics are weighted according to importance and are detailed below:

  • Price (20%): Using the base profile detailed below, we compared the company's average rate with the national average. If it surpassed this average, we gave a lower rating; if it fell below, we awarded a higher rating.
  • Coverage (20%): The highest-scoring companies offer a variety of coverage options, including bundling options, roadside assistance, telematics, beyond-basic coverage levels, and a variety of other coverage types.
  • Customer service (30%): We averaged ratings from JD Power, the NAIC complaint index to come up with a rating for the company's customer service. In instances when a company is not rated, we may use alternative rating agencies such as the Better Business Bureau and Trust Pilot.
  • Financial strength (10%): We use AM Best to determine a company's financial standing. In some cases when a company is not rated by AM Best, we may use an alternative measure such as Demotech.
  • The Zebra's Customer Satisfaction Survey (20%): The Zebra conducts an annual survey measuring customer satisfaction for many of the top insurance companies with the goal of ranking both the best auto insurance companies and best home insurance companies. Read more below.

For our auto insurance review, we analyzed more than 83 million insurance rates spanning every U.S. ZIP code using a sample user profile: a 30-year-old single male driver with a Honda Accord, good credit and full coverage at these levels:

  • $50,000 per person/$100,000 per incident for bodily injury liability
  • $50,000 per incident for property damage liability
  • $500 deductibles for collision and comprehensive coverage

For our home insurance review, rates are based on a sample user profile: a 45-year-old married homeowner living in a 2,500-square-foot single-story home built in 2011 with these coverage levels:

  • $200,000 for the dwelling
  • $20,000 for other structures
  • $100,000 for personal property
  • $100,000 for personal liability
  • $1,000 deductible

These sample premiums are dynamic and automatically refresh whenever the newest data is made available.

To generate pricing for particular rating factors, we adjusted this profile based on common pricing factors used by major car insurance companies. These factors include credit score, coverage level and others.

For The Zebra's Customer Satisfaction Survey, findings are based on an online quantitative survey of 4,134 current U.S. auto and home insurance customers, with Census-balanced sampling by age, gender and region. Categories with n=<20 responses are considered insufficient sample size and are not reported. This survey was developed by The Zebra and executed by independent research firm Maru/Blue in 2023.
