Question

Will AIG cover me if I get in an accident overseas?

I have been an AIG customer for about a year now and I also travel a lot. This year, my family and I will be spending quite a bit of time in Europe. I'm planning to rent a car, maybe in more than one place, and I am wondering if my new AIG policy is good for accidents overseas.

Standard U.S. auto policies, even from AIG, usually don’t cover you while driving outside the country. However, AIG offers specialized international auto insurance and travel coverage that can protect you if you’ll be driving abroad. Depending on your plan, this could include liability, collision, and even emergency medical benefits for you and your passengers.

If you’re planning to rent or drive a car overseas, it’s best to confirm your coverage before your trip. Some drivers choose to add temporary international coverage through AIG or purchase a standalone policy from a rental company. That way, you’re not left uncovered in case of an accident far from home.

Depending on how long you plan to be gone, you might want to look at options for lowering your coverage while you're out of the country. I definitely don't recommend canceling insurance altogether, but if this is an extended length in Europe, you could look into storage coverage. If you're in the market for a different policy or just want discuss options, you can always reach out to our knowledgeable agents. Enjoy your travels!
