Question

What's the 'club' part of Auto Club about?

I’ve had AAA for car roadside assistance forever, and I see they offer home insurance, too. I just bought a house and want to combine some things. But I don't understand the whole club thing. Do I need a membership, or because I've had it before, I'm already in? Is it exclusive like USAA, or can anyone join the club? I’ve also read online that service can vary depending on the local club. Should I be worried about that, or is it basically the same experience everywhere?

First, yes, you usually need an AAA membership to buy home insurance through them. AAA can feel a little confusing because it’s not structured like a single national insurance company. It's made up of regional “clubs,” and membership gives you access to things like roadside assistance, travel discounts, and insurance products. Unlike USAA, it’s not exclusive to military families. In most areas, anyone can join by paying an annual membership fee.

Now, about the “club” structure. This is where the variation comes in.

Each AAA club operates in a specific region and may partner with different insurance companies to underwrite home policies. That means pricing, coverage options, and even parts of the claims experience can differ depending on where you live. One region may have very strong service reviews, while another may have more mixed feedback.

So yes, when people say service can vary by local club, there’s some truth to that. It doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have a bad experience, but it does mean AAA isn’t exactly the same everywhere.

If you’re considering AAA for home insurance, I’d suggest asking a few practical questions:

  • Who underwrites the home policy in my state?
  • Are claims handled locally or through a national partner?
  • How does bundling home and auto affect my total cost?
  • What discounts come with my membership?

If you’ve already had a good experience with AAA for your roadside assistance, that’s a positive sign. Just remember that home insurance may involve a different team and underwriting partner. Do a quick side-by-side quote comparison and talk through the details with your local agent. A little homework upfront can help you decide if it’s the right fit.

An insurance "agency" is a business that sells insurance coverage through on…
