Question

Can another driver file a claim on my insurance if they were hit by someone else driving my vehicle?

My boyfriend hit another vehicle while he was driving my car, but it was unclear which driver was at fault. The other driver took my insurance information, but my boyfriend isn't on my policy. Could they still file a claim against my company even though I wasn't driving?

Since insurance coverage follows your vehicle then your policy would pay primary for damage caused by your car even if someone else was driving. That being said, it is possible that through the details of the accident the other driver could very well be considered at fault, in which case, the other driver's insurance policy should cover the damage to your car. I would recommend contacting your insurance company first and let them know what happened. They should be able to guide you forward from this point.

What part of my policy covers my car if I hit a pothole?

The resulting damage from hitting a pothole is actually considered an "At Fault" accident and would be covered under the collision portion of your policy. The reason this is the case is because insurance companies expect drivers to operate their vehicles safely and watch for hazards in the road to avoid frivolous claims.

Should I get insurance or car registration first?

In most states you are required to provide proof that your vehicle is insured before allowing you to register your vehicle. The insurance policy must meet the state's minimum coverage requirement to tag your vehicle so you will want to take your proof of coverage with you to verify your compliance with the law.
