Can I get AAA roadside assistance if I don't have insurance with them?

I want to get a roadside assistance plan through AAA, but I really like my current insurance company, Allstate. Can I get AAA roadside assistance while keeping my Allstate coverage?

Yes, you can. AAA roadside assistance is a standalone membership, so you don’t need to have your car insurance through AAA to use it. But if you're budget-conscious, it’s a good idea to compare what AAA offers with other programs—some may offer similar coverage at a lower price.

What does AAA roadside assistance include?

When you sign up for a membership, you get help with common car issues like:

  • Towing
  • Dead battery jump-starts
  • Flat tire service
  • Lockout assistance
  • Emergency fuel delivery

Coverage applies to you personally, not just one specific vehicle. So you're covered whether you’re the driver or just riding along. AAA also offers multiple membership levels, so you can pick the plan that fits your budget and gives you peace of mind. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Basic – Covers the essentials, like short-distance tows and basic services
  • Plus – Adds longer towing distances and a few extra perks
  • Premier – Offers the most coverage, including extended towing and trip interruption benefits

AAA offers more than just roadside help. Members get discounts on hotels, car rentals, theme park tickets, and even everyday shopping and dining. You can also get help with travel planning, DMV services in some areas, and savings on car repairs at AAA-approved shops. It’s a handy set of benefits that can pay off in surprising ways.

If you’re already with Allstate, check out their roadside assistance offerings. You can usually add it to your policy for an extra fee. They also offer a Rescue System, which is a pay-per-use roadside service—no membership required. If you're already a customer, they might even offer a discount.

There are plenty of other standalone roadside services, too, so it’s worth comparing a few options to find the best fit for your needs and budget.

I scraped my car in a parking garage and it's a $1600 repair. Should I pay out of pocket or file an insurance claim?

I would not file a claim. With your $500 deductible, your insurance company would pay out $1100 for the damages — but in California, your premium could also increase by 42% over three years if you're cited for an at-fault collision (which this would be considered as). You would save more money…
