Question

Can a married couple have separate car insurance policies?

Is it possible for a husband and wife to have individual car insurance policies? My wife drives one vehicle while I drive the other 100% of the time. This is due to our commutes.

Yes, you can have two separate policies. This can have its benefits in some cases. However, you will still need to be listed on each other's policies as household members/spouses but you can be excluded. Being excluded means you would not be covered under the policy at all. With that being said, it is typically more cost-effective to have one policy. You will qualify for more discounts, such as multi-vehicle, which leads to better rates. Good luck and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

If I'm hit my a driver with the same insurance company as mine, do I file the claim under my policy or the other driver's?

Filing the claim on your policy means you are going to have to pay your collision deductible and could possibly impact your rate. Personally, I would not agree to do that. The majority of rear-end collisions are considered to be the fault of the driver in the back, so it should not take them any lo…
