Question

Will Cincinnati pay for my friend damaging my car?

I loaned my car to a friend who was visiting from out of town. He ended up sliding on some ice and hitting another car. Nobody was hurt, but now I’m confused about how the insurance works.

I have Cincinnati Insurance for my car, but my friend also has his own auto policy in another state. Does my insurance cover the accident since it’s my car, or does his insurance step in first because he was the one driving?

Your Cincinnati Insurance policy will likely cover the initial claim for damage or injuries related to the crash. The general rule is that car insurance usually follows the car first, not the driver.

Your friend’s insurance may still come into play, though. If the damages exceed your policy’s liability limits, their policy can sometimes act as secondary coverage to help cover the remaining costs.

That said, there are a couple of important details that can affect how things play out.

  1. First is permission. Your policy usually covers drivers who have your permission to usethe car. If someone takes your vehicle without permission, the situation can become more complicated and coverage may be different.
  2. Second is the type of coverage you carry. Liability insurance pays for damage or injuries you cause to others, but repairs to your own car depend on whether you have collision coverage.
  3. Finally, there’s the question of premiums. Even if your friend was driving, the accident can still affect your policy because it involved your vehicle.

The good news is that insurers deal with situations like this all the time. The best step is to report the accident promptly and let the claims team sort out the details between policies. If it ends up affecting your rates at the next renewal, it might be worth shopping around and comparing some different companies to see if there are cheaper options.
