Question

If I have gap insurance and totaled my car, but there is no gap between insurance payment and remaining loan balance, do I get a refund?

I hit a deer, which totaled my car, but it turns out there's no gap between my remaining balance and claims payout. How is this handled and do I get a refund?

Not all gap insurance is written in the same manner, so you may have to refer to your insurer to get more information. From my understanding, if you pay off the loan and didn't use gap insurance to do so, they will probably refund some premiums paid back to you. It doesn't hurt to call them up and ask.

What coverage do I need if a deer runs into my car?

Animals cause all sorts of damage to vehicles, and not always because someone hits them with their car. Luckily, car insurance companies don't discriminate over you hitting a deer or a deer hitting your car, so in cases of damage caused by animals – with the exception of hitting a dead animal …

Will my insurance have to pay more than the car is worth?

This can depend. In California, a car is deemed totaled if the cost of repairs plus the scrap value of the vehicle is greater or equal to the actual cash value of the vehicle. Meaning, if your insurance company agrees with the Kelley Blue Book value, it is likely your vehicle will be totaled. If yo…

Can I drive off the lot with just an SR22 in California?

No, you need to have comprehensive and collision coverage to drive off the lot if you are financing the car. Comprehensive and collision coverage protects against physical damage to the car. Also, your SR-22 non-owners policy only covers you driving a car that you do not own or drive regularly. We …

I scraped my car in a parking garage and it's a $1600 repair. Should I pay out of pocket or file an insurance claim?

I would not file a claim. With your $500 deductible, your insurance company would pay out $1100 for the damages — but in California, your premium could also increase by 42% over three years if you're cited for an at-fault collision (which this would be considered as). You would save more money…
